Gay marriage supporters in Rhode Island are marking the one-year anniversary of a Massachusetts court decision giving them permission to marry in the Bay State.
Now members of Marriage Equality Rhode Island want Rhode Island lawmakers to recognize their unions back home. They hold a meeting on the steps of the Statehouse at 10 today.
The big roadblocks to gay marriage and gay rights in Rhode Island are House Speaker William Murphy and Senate President Joseph Montalbano. Time has come to look at both of them and reassess. The person to watch is Rep. Arthur Handy, D-Cranston. He has promised to introduce gay marriage legislation again this year.
Bishop Tobin continues to oppose equal rights for gay people even if they are not Catholics. Many other religious leaders support it, including clergy from the United Church of Christ, the Universalist Unitarian Society and Providence’s Mathewson Street Methodist Church. Their views don't seem to matter to Montalbano and Murphy who want to impose their own religious views on all RIslanders.
Unfortunately the position taken by Murphy and Montalbano is not the majority of opinion in the legislature and as they continue to force their religious views on us, it is time for us to maybe get them out of the way via the ballot box.
