In a final
round of legal briefs, Governor Carcieri argues that it’s against the
state’s public policy to allow same-sex marriages, but unlike some
others who share that view, he says it wouldn’t make sense to prevent
two Providence women, who married in Massachusetts, from now getting
divorced. “While Rhode Island has a strong public policy opposing recognition
of same-sex marriage, it also has an interest in allowing its citizens
to extract themselves from those circumstances that the state has a
strong public policy against,” Carcieri’s brief says. “By granting a
divorce, neither the court nor the state endorses or lends validity to
the marriage it is dissolving.” So here's the logic: although the marriage never existed in the first place according to RI Law, it's ok for RI Courts to dissolve it. Huh? Carcieri will misshape every sense of logic in his mean-spirited fight to prevent gay marriage and full equal rights for gay RIslanders. It is time for every RIslander interested in the progression of equal rights for all RIslanders to oppose Carcieri as he attacks gay people, immigrants and those living in poverty. We also need to identify and fight those democrats in the legislature who are acting like republicans and supporting the Carcieri mean-spirited initiatives against poor people, gays, and immigrants.
